Green Reads 1.0: Laundry Magnets, Picky Pajamas and Insanely Good Cookies

Happy Halloween! Since I am an information addict and am bouncing around on the internet a lot, I thought I would start a weekly habit of sharing some of the links I’ve been reading and other blogs I think are cool.

Green Your Halloween
Here are 10 easy tips to having a greener Halloween. My favorite tip is to pass out locally grown apples instead of candy. Apples are awesome and healthy.

Laundry on the Cheap
Rebecca over at The Green Baby Guide did some observation and some calculation to find the greenest laundry detergent. I’m definitely going to switch to her recommended brand. GreenBabyGuide.com has a lot of great practical information about green products and practices.

Laundry on the Free?
In my green circles there has been talk of these magic laundry magnets that wash your clothes without any detergents. The secret, they say, lies in saponification, which is what the detergents do to get clothes clean and supposedly what the magnets can do, as well. I’m curious, but scared to buy them and waste my money on something that dosen’t work. Has anyone tried these?

Pajama Pickiness
A new study from the Environmental Working Group found that young children have 3 times as much toxic fire retardant chemicals in their bloodstreams as their mothers do. Flame retardants are on electronics, mattresses and children’s pajamas. This is why I always look for 100% cotton pajamas for my daughter. Polyester pj’s have to have flame retardant on them and the cotton ones don’t.

Insanely Easy & Delicious Cookies
These cookies are so easy and they taste so good. They only have four ingredients! Many of you don’t know this about me, but my daughter and I are on a gluten-free, dairy-free diet. These cookies are gluten-free and dairy-free if you use dairy-free chocolate chips. (Most semi-sweet chocolate chips are.) But you’ll love them even if you’re not concerned about those things.

Have a safe and fun halloween and a great weekend!
